In PS2; there are a fair few different guns, which means there's something for everyone and one for every situation.
I've noticed that most people seem to land upon one gun, decide it works well in most situations; and stick with it at all times. YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG. You can resupply at any time, and the situation you are fighting in changes at all times. You could at one point be crouched behind an unrealisticly large tree in the middle of an open field whilst tank shells whizz past you and occasional newbs pop their heads out and lost them to a well timed and no recoil inducing sniper round... Or running around biolab hip firing and knifing enemy MAXs in the face; and in both situations using the same gun.
Shotguns are beautiful and amazingly powerful when used correctly. When used incorrectly though, prepare to see yourself swear with frustration and vow never to pick one up ever again. Your play style has to change when using them ie move from cover to cover to get close to the enemy and never engage in an open area. When you make eye contact with an enemy heavy in the distance in an open area and you see him putting away his rocket launcher and pulling out his LMG which activating his shield, you know you are fucked. When you run around a corner in a building into a heavy doing the same thing; you know that he's the one who's fucked.
An important thing to remember about shotguns is that aiming down the sights does nothing for accuracy (except when using slug ammo but I'll get to that) so you can use them entirely whilst shooting from the hip - which gives you such incredible response time and manoeuvrability meaning that in CQB; you are going to win.
3 rounds from a shotgun at close range gets you the kill. 5/6 at medium ranges and absolutely useless at medium ranges and onwards (except for doing no damage but getting kill assist points). A close range headshot will kill instantly since most of the pellets will hit the head doing massive critical damage which is calculated per pellet hitting the head on an individual basis, not the entire round being counted as critical or not.
Slug ammo turns all the little pellets spraying out your barrel end into one big bullet. It costs 100 certs and is equipped in the ammo slot. It makes hip firing useless entirely; but when you aim down the sights, it becomes effectively a semi auto sniper rifle. The range/accuracy/velocity on this thing with slug ammo is borderline retarded and in my opinion needs nerfing. Despite all this, I never use slug ammo. If I'm not in CQB range I'm using the cyclone SMG, medium range I use the gauss semi auto sniper (if it's an open area) and long range to very long range I use the LA80 bolt action sniper.
Basically, the only excuse I can think of for people to not use shotguns is if they haven't saved up enough to unlock one yet.
I've massively been sidetracked from my point I was planning to make here...
Which of the three shotguns do YOU use?!
Mauler S6 - fast reload
Piston - automatic fast firing
Sweeper - large magazine capacity
Are the choices (not including the jackhammer which is NC's legendary weapon)
Personally I swear by the mauler, I can't endorse it enough. I use it with iron sights, standard ammo and extended mags. The extended mags give me 10 rounds per clip instead of 6 which is essential. One upgrade to the mauler and it's already taken away the benefit of the sweeper. You don't want the foregrip or laser sight on a hip firing killing machine as it takes away the pellet spread which is what makes this thing so powerful.
And the reload speed on it is beautiful. Too many times when trialling the piston was I killed as a result of the incredibly slow reload time. If you're in combat against more than one person then you will probably lose with the piston. With the mauler, you can kill one; put 2/3 rounds into the next guy then reload and finish him off before he has time to turn around. Unfortunately, you only get this fast reload when you have at least 1 shell still in the gun, otherwise you spend what feels like a lifetime feeding a shell into the chamber, loading a new mag and then finally cocking the gun. When there is still a round in the gun he just yanks out the mag and puts a new (full) one in.
So yeah let me know what you think. Feel free to call me names and tell me why you are right and I am wrong.
